Michigan practiced the statute labor system in the 19th century, which required every able-bodied male living within a road district to pay his road tax by working on the construction or maintenance of public roads. If he was unable to work, he was required to pay the assessed financial amount instead. These lists provide the names of landowners, property descriptions and assessments, and the number of hours worked on roads.
