Description

A photograph of the German Workingmen's Benevolent Society in Marshall, Michigan also known as Arbeiter Unterstützungs Verein von Marshall, Michigan.

Information about the organization and photograph provided by Rose Breitenwischer:

“Richard Carver wrote about the hall and society in A History of Marshall on page 226-227. My grandfather, John G. Krauss, joined the group in April 1900 and was #159. I would say the picture was taken between this date and the mid-teens of the twentieth century, when Carver says the organization dissolved. My grandfather received a receipt book, which was like a bank passbook, and a membership pin. A member was expected to present his receipt book at every meeting along with a fee ($1.00). A cashier would enter a date stamp and sign for the transaction in the receipt book.”
